Irish label House Of Disco will release a four-track EP from burgeoning Irish producers on 16th September.
Marking the label founders’ return from London to Ireland, the ‘Home Turf’ EP features tracks from LPM, Mix & Fairbanks, Shee and Purple Ice, with each cut hopping about on the line between house and disco, boasting jazzy sampling, smooth melodies and bouncy grooves.
“Big, big, big.” It’s June 25th 2009, and one hour into his still-pirate Rinse FM show, Blackdown is jittery. An unmastered new track is drifting through the mix like fog, and the host DJ’s voice cracks with anticipation: “I’m not going to lie, this tune is massive.” He yammers excitedly over the second drop, shouts out Hotflush Recordings boss Scuba for signing the track first, and bigs up the unknown producer, Joy Orbison.
Relocating to London gave Medvesek the chance to venture into new and inspiring territories, spending nights (and mornings) in clubs like now-defunct West End institution The End, and Plastic People, the beloved and sorely-missed club that artists including Four Tet and Floating Points consider intrinsic to their careers.
“What they were doing was totally unique, and I loved the genre free approach to music,” Medvesek remembers. “The sheer passion behind their work and the love of a good party. People like Hudson Mohawke and Rustie, for example, are responsible for a sound that we now take for granted, but back then it was completely alien and fresh. Numbers paved a lot of paths in electronic music, the effect of these labels is global.”
As well as Nightrave, a creative project called Producergirls, founded by E M M A and co-run by Medvesek, hosts workshops for women who are looking to explore production techniques and Ableton/FL Studio software. “I’m super proud to be part of Producergirls and the ripple effect it created” she says, “to see women that attended our workshops go on to have careers in music is just incredible.”
Having first started raving as a student in New York, Abd’s love and dedication to the art of DJing has seen her make considerable strides in the past year. 2019 has found her touring Europe and North America, playing parties by Room 4 Resistance and Omnidisc, and bringing her mum along to a Gamut party at Paris’ La Station De La Gare Des Mines.
Looking to the future, Abd has a lot in the works. Having started a new party series, 3AFAK, co-curated with her friend Sanna, Bergsonist also has an LP landing soon on Optimo Music as well as an EP on Hypercolour. With plans to tour Europe again, she is also heading back to Morocco for the first time in four years, intending to make the most of the trip by working with local artists and capturing field recordings to use in her music.

When DJ Mag catch up with Lester, she’s recovering from a “a double whammy of Celtic rowdiness”, with special thanks to Belfast and Inverness. She’s spent the last 12 or so months travelling and gigging extensively, a period she describes as both surreal and exciting.
It was during that residency, where she rubbed shoulders with B.Traits, George Fitzgerald, Hunnee and Skream, that she began to imagine the transition between just wanting to play music, and it becoming her career. “I’ve wanted this since I was, like, 13-years-old,” Lester explains, “I just didn’t think it was realistic - especially since there weren’t really many female role models in the early 2000s.”

Lyric Hood has announced her first solo EP, 'Nineteen/11:11'.
Joining her father Robert Hood as Floorplan in 2016 and subsequently releasing the 'Victorious' album, Lyric also remixed 'Never Grow Old' for the duo's 'Let the Church' EP.
On her solo debut, Lyric produces a house heater in the form of 'Nineteen' and closes the EP with thunderous techno on '11:11'.
Earlier this year Floorplan released EP, 'So Glad/I Feel Him Moving'.
In his own life, Cédric Steinmyller plays two roles. There’s the quiet, observant young man, whose crystal blue eyes peer downward as he speaks. And then there is Klingande, the sensational commercial house icon who dominates the decks with the same confident ferocity that’s made him one to watch since 2012. When we connect with him during Miami Music Week, we meet both personas. Though seemingly shy upon introduction, Steinmyller possesses a friendly and relaxed demeanor. “It’s very easy to connect with people here,” he tells DJ Mag.
