Poll 2015: Netsky

Apparently Netsky, or Boris Daenen, was too busy for DJ Mag’s interview. He’s certainly been keeping active in 2015, with gigs at Amnesia, Ibiza (for Together), at UMF in Miami and Tomorrowland Brazil just for starters. He’s also had the honour of remixing Jack Ü’s mega hit ‘Take Ü There’, and recently unleashed new single ‘Rio’ featuring the improbably named Digital Farm Animals.

His glossy, ultra-clean take on drum & bass has made him an unlikely regular appearance in the Top 100 DJs poll. Netsky’s got a pop sensibility that chimes with the youthful EDM audience.

Already two albums deep into his career, both appearing on accessible d&b label Hospital, he’s recorded with Beth Ditto and rising producer Metrik, and now finds himself playing the sort of stadium affairs normally reserved for the EDM big dogs. Those Stateside gigs for Mad Decent and Ultra are obviously paying off.

Since bursting onto the scene as a young teenager with epic hardcore tune 'Valley Of The Shadows' under the name Origin Unknown in the early '90s, Andrew Clarke has been immersed in breakbeat science. He started RAM Records in 1992 after borrowing £1000 from his uncle, and Ram 004 — 'Shadows' — contained the moon landing-sampling “31 seconds” snip and the “long dark tunnel” phrase culled from a BBC documentary about near-death experiences.

As drum & bass grew in the '90s he became one of its key playas, smashing into the Top 100 DJs poll at the start of the noughties and remaining there for the next decade and more. Usually the Highest Drum & Bass DJ in the poll, he's been voted back in again by his legion of fans — plenty of whom again were raving at his All Night Long sold out 02 Brixton Academy show at Halloween just the other day.

So what's been the highlight of 2015 for the drum & bass don? “Probably playing the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, South Korea!” he tells DJ Mag. “When you're growing up and dreaming of being a DJ, you can never imagine playing a gig like that. I was just dreaming of playing at my local club!”

Drum & Bass
Best known for:
“Never sleeping!”
Tune of the year:
Audio 'Shatterdome'
Ram Records, Hornchurch
Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2015:
What’s the most important skill a DJ should have?:
“Connect with the crowd, enjoy yourself!”
Is the future still bright for EDM?:
You tell me!
Does the constant travelling and DJ lifestyle ever take its toll on you mentally?:
“It can do for sure. You gotta pace yourself and take care of yourself.”
What cause is closest to your heart?:
I think it would have to be children's charities. A local girl from Hornchurch called Joni died of a brain tumour this year. An incredibly horrible thing to go through for the poor girl and family, she was so brave. Everyone was raising money for her treatment in America that sadly never happened. The whole town came out and lined the streets and let off balloons for her funeral.
Which club would you like to bring back from the dead?:
“Without doubt it would be The End [in London]. So many magical memories from that club. So important for music, the vibe and the growth of artists.”
