Poll Clubs 2016: PHONOX

Phonox

Poll Address:
London, United Kingdom
Capacity:
600
Synonym:
phonox (london)

Round the corner from Brixton’s O2 Academy there’s a nightclub doorway. From the outside you’d think it’s a small gaff, but inside it’s a veritable Doctor Who’s Tardis! Formerly known as Plan B, Phonox was bought by the Columbo Group last year — they also own XOYO, The Nest and the Jazz Café, amongst other London venues — and had a tasty refurb before re-opening last September.

Best Of British award-winner Jasper James was immediately installed as a resident for Saturday nights, sometimes bringing down unannounced guests like Disclosure and Laura Jones, and other DJs who’ve played extended sets to the big square room recently on the Friday include Omar-S, Joy Orbison and DJ Sprinkles.

Poll Clubs 2016: M2

A regular in our Top 100 for a few years now, M2 kept up the pressure in 2015 with plenty of massive trance parties featuring big names like DJ Aly & Fila, ex-cake thrower Steve Aoki and Swanky Tunes amongst many others. The club itself is as high-end and glossy as they come, with shiny decor, a focus on VIPs and decor that is as designer as they come. The circular DJ booth is often obscured by fancy dancers and plenty of visuals ensure the place is never less than a sensory overload.

Poll Clubs 2016: LOFT METROPOLIS

One of very few super-sized clubs in Paris, Metropolis is awesome in every regard: the five-roomed space boasts seven bars and has a main room sunken surrounded by balconies to lend it an intense, amphitheatre-styled atmosphere. Push in design and flash in finish, the club is known for its high-end VIP area, scantily-clad dancers and grand glow in the dark robots as well as more LEDs than a christmas lights factory. Musically, you can expect a showy smorgasbord of commercial dance, EDM and plenty of glossy electro beats.

With China’s economy booming in full swing, Modo has successfully capitalised on the VIP culture associated with mainstream music, booking artists such as Morgan Page, Will Sparks & Felguk in the capital, further cementing Modo's name as a top-end contributor to elite clubbing.

Poll Clubs 2016: VELVET

Velvet

Poll Address:
Asuncion, Paraguay
Capacity:
1500
Address:
General Bernardo O'Higgins
Asuncion
Paraguay
Synonym:
velvet (asuncion)

Opened in 2013, Paraguay’s Velvet club is the product of a global explosion in dance music that has quite literally touched all four corners of the world.

Initially built on a policy of booking EDM’s hottest acts, the club now looks towards the underground for sustenance with two new techno nights, Ologram and UnXpected, taking centre stage.

The last 12 months has seen the club earn its underground stripes with a forward-thinking booking policy that has seen the likes of Green Velvet (quite fittingly) and Brodinski playing the club alongside some of EDM’s biggest names, firmly establishing Velvet as one of South America's most exciting clubs.

Poll Clubs 2016: FOUNDATION SEATTLE

Foundation has found its way onto the Top 100 list several times with good reason. Small, but mighty, they focus on a combination of state-of-the-art technology with good old-fashioned savvy booking. The lineups are varied, sporting names across genres.

From TJR to Minnesota to Black Tiger Sex Machine, their history shows the venue’s commitment to being forward-thinking not just in fancy lighting and sound rigs (of which they have both), but in the sounds they represent as well. It’s no wonder industry elites like tyDi have given them shout-outs — this warehouse-channeling room is every DJ’s dream.

Poll Clubs 2016: CLUB CUBIC

Macau has always been renowned for the country's giant casinos and extravagant malls which has earned it the nickname, the 'Las Vegas of Asia', and much like sin city, Club Cubic has looked towards dance music fans to pull in the crowds too.

Club Cubic, then, is an assault on the senses; set across 30,000 sprawling square feet and two levels, the venue features everything from a lase-lit dance pool to a Gothic-style bar.

Over the last 12 months everyone from Axtone to Kryder has played the club which has seen Club Cubic become more than a worthy rival to anything Hong Kong has to offer.

Poll Clubs 2016: CHINESE LAUNDRY

Sydney institution Chinese Laundry is one of the city’s largest and longest running clubs. In the past year, Chinese Laundry has seen sets from Scuba, Kolsch, Xxxy, Detroit Swindle and many more. Much loved local promoters Refuge also throw regular parties at Chinese Laundry, welcoming Robosonic, Weiss, Ejeca, Oliver Dollar, Jozif

Poll Clubs 2016: LIGHT NIGHTCLUB

If Las Vegas is indeed Sin City, then its clubs are the shepherds of after dark debauchery. LIGHT Nightclub brings some shimmer to that darkness — literally.

In true over-the-top Vegas fashion, the club boasts two story floor-to-ceiling screens featuring one of the most impressive visual effects and lighting displays in the world, constructed by none other than the genius creative minds behind Cirque Du Soleil. 2016 residents include the likes of Disclosure, Bass Jackers and Morgan Page.

It should come as no surprise then that LIGHT is now a veteran of our Top 100 Clubs list, making its third appearance in as many years.

Poll Clubs 2016: DRAGONFLY

Dragonfly’s transformation from a restaurant and bar in 2004 to an fully-fledged club in 2015 has been something of an ongoing process.

Only really finishing last year — after a major six month refit — the owners took the logical decision to double-down on the venue's potential as a fully-fledged club and it’s really paying off.

With the likes of A-Trak and Laidback Luke gracing the decks during the last 12 months, the club’s booking policy on paper is a good balance between commercial and underground, which attracts a diverse crowd made up of fashion-conscious locals, expats and music fans alike.
