For those still on the island with stamina — no doubt spanked by Space Closing and destroyed by DC10 — there's only one destination left to round off the ultimate season. And that's Sankeys Ibiza and its 24-hour toga party, starting at midnight on Tuesday. Following their hugely successful second season in Ibiza, Sankeys have again upped their game, which saw them open seven nights a week this year, hosting some of the biggest brands on the scene, including ViVa Warriors, Fuse London, Hypercolour and Solomun's Neon Nights project. Every time we've attended Sankeys, our minds have always — regardless of the night — ended up on the good side of blown, and that is what we expect as we approach the final battle — times a thousand.
‘When in Rome’ was the attitude when Sankeys revealed their around-the-clock line-up, as they drew inspiration from the lascivious hedonists of Ancient Rome, encouraging clubbers to cover their modesty with white sheets. At 4am, upon arrival to the club it's great to see that so many have obliged and made the effort, even though we can't help but think that many of the hotels and worker apartment owners are missing one or two sets of bed-linen from their establishments.
As we enter the Lab, the back room of the basement, suitably labelled the Coliseum for the night, we catch the back end of Âme slaying the crowd with a live set-up made up of low-slung deep techno, before we head to The Dungeon to witness house music gangster Sneak in his natural habitat, the place where he feels he can really let loose and unleash his signature sound of deep, jackin', booty-shaking beats to maximum effect..
After leaving Sankeys around 8am, we then return refreshed at 7pm to find an admirable amount of people still going strong. This time we are met with master-of-the-bassline, Sankeys resident Darius Syrossian in The Dungeon, who we catch dropping the sing-along classic Hector Moralez remix of Sneak's ‘Funky Rhythm’, his own 'Have Some of This', soon to land on Defected, and his remix of Franco Gianelli's 'Lost In 27'.
Even we doubt our stamina when we hear Sankeys will eke the 24-hour showcase out to an (even more) epic 32 hours, although it's (literally) music to our ears that the special guests will be Parisian house heroes — two of the most wanted on the island this season — Dan Ghenacia and Dyed Soundorom. Coming on at 12am, back-to-back, they serve up a banquet of classy, raw-as-you-like vintage house from San Francisco, New York and Chicago alongside fresh tracks from their much-lauded Apollonia imprint to finish off a party that'll stay with us for a very long time!
