As we have previously reported, popular music publicist and DJ Sonia Akow has sadly been diagnosed with Leukaemia.
As a popular figure in the bass music scene, a huge line up of DJs have donated their services free of charge for a benefit gig at The Egg, London on Thursday 28th March.
The line up includes Shy FX (pictured above), Krafty Kuts, MJ Cole, B- Traits, Dub Pistols Soundsystem, A-Skillz, Freesylers, and about 30 others, including friend of Sonia's and DJ Mag scribe, Carl Loben.
As well as raising money for Sonia, who has been unable to work since her diagnosis, the event aims to raise awareness about the stem cell donors needed to help save Sonia's life. Sonia's moister died of the same disease a year ago, and Sonia needs people with mixed white, Chinese, black Caribbean and Indian connections to donate stem cells, as these are all part of Sonia's heritage.
Organisers of the event and Sonia's boyfriend Toby are urging people to join the Anthony Nolan Trust. Joining a donor register may sound daunting, but all you have to do is fill in a short form and provide a saliva sample. Contact them HERE (if you're under 30).
If you're found to be a match, donating your stem cells is not much different to donating blood – and there's no operation involved.
So whether you join the donor register or attend this great event, you can do so in the knowledge that you are helping a very worthwhile cause - as is clear by the number of great DJs and artists who are supporting the cause.
